The Mallee Landcare Group purpose is to advance the natural environment and provide education on matters relating to the natural environment.

The Mallee Landcare Group Inc. formed in 1990 and has been one of the most active Landcare groups in the Mallee. The group has a membership of over 160 volunteer members throughout the townships of Turriff, Speed, Tempy, Patchewollock, Nandaly, Mittyack, Ouyen, Walpeup, Underbool and Hattah. The group covers 1,085,000 ha; supporting sustainable agricultural and environmental best practice systems for the Mallee. It also encourages research and development by community groups and individuals, including schools, local Council and business, to address local priority natural resource management issues.

What We Do?

Demonstrated organisational capacity and capability.

The Mallee Landcare volunteers partner with community groups, shops and businesses including the Ouyen Men’s shed volunteers, the Ouyen Historical Society; North West Ag; Lamattina’s Carrots; The Ouyen Lake Committee forming new connections and pathways.

The Mallee Landcare Group has undertaken revegetation works with local schools including the Tempy and Underbool Primary Schools and Ouyen P-12 College. The Tempy Primary School Malleefowl Project was auspiced by the Mallee Landcare Group and focused on improving degraded habitats; developing wildlife corridors and learning how the students can improve conservation of the threatened Malleefowl. 

Mallee Landcare Group Inc. is a volunteer group which has good relationships with members of all facets of the local community. Many group members have skills in project management, accounting, governance, OH&S and facilitating groups. 

The Mallee Landcare group is experienced in:

  • Organising training events including Farm Chemical Users Courses;
  • 1080 and PAPP training;
  • Wool classers training;
  • OH&S and governance;
  • Seed collection workshops for volunteers and students.

The group have workshops with a focus on mental health for rural community members and an agriculture plastics recycling program. 

The group is experienced in undertaking revegetation, habitat restoration; pest plant and animal control projects; dune reclamation, undertaking projects with local community groups including the Ouyen Lake development, regional capacity building and working with local schools. The group is efficient in managing and acquitting projects on time and within budget. 

The Mallee Landcare Group board act with good governance leading and managing projects and involving as many community volunteers as possible.

Join Us

Mallee Landcare Group are always looking for new volunteers and members to assist with project work.

The Mallee Landcare Group meet bi-monthly, alternating meetings between the Ouyen Club and the Patchewollock Hotel. Meetings are held in accordance with our constitution; follow an agenda and are an opportunity to raise any concerns of an environmental, natural resource management or sustainable agriculture focus. Our meetings include project updates; volunteer opportunities and planning for future events.

You are welcome to come along to any event we have facilitated or get involved in any project work; event or field day.

We work in partnership with volunteer community groups, schools, and private landholders. We facilitate and promote education and knowledge-building through workshops, field days, and events. We auspice grants and manage natural resource management and environmental restoration projects across the region.
